Containing many pedigrees for families from Leeds

and the surrounding areas.

The full title of this book is "LOIDIS AND ELMETE or an attempt to illustrate the districts described in those words by Bede and supposed to embrace the lower portions of Airedale and Wharfedale, together with the entire vale of the Calder".
It was published in 1816 and is 17 inches high by 11 inches wide, is 2 inches thick and weighs 11 pounds.

This large book contains some 580 pages, including numerous detailed plates and 15 large pedigrees, along with lots of names, lists of vicars/rectors for the various parishes, etc. etc.

The book covers the following places: Leeds, Holbeck, Hunslet, Armley, Wortley, Beeston, Farneley, Bramley, Hedingley, Allerton, Gipton, Osmundthorp, Caldcotes, Knowsthorp, Whitkirk, Ledston, Barwick, Ledsham, Sherburn in Elmet, Barwick in Elmet, Bardsey, Collingham, Harewood, Adel, Otley, Weston Vavasour, Guiseley, Yeadon, Horseforth, Calverley, Batley, Rothwell, Birstall, Swillington, Castleford, Methley, Wakefield, Horbury, Dewsbury, Hartshead, Thornhill, Kirkheaton, Kirkburton, Huddersfield, Bradford, Mirfield, Halifax, Elland, and Heptonstall.

The main pedigrees given are: Oates of Leeds; Dixon; Vavasour of Weston; Tong; Tempest; Lords of Harewood; Lowther, Earl of Lonsdale; Lowther of Swillington; LascelIes, Earl of Harewood; Fawkes, of Farnley; Dyneley, of Bramhope; Savile, Earl of Mexborough; Beaumont of Whitley, Stansfeld, of Stansfeld Hall; Sharp, of Litle Horton; Rookes, of Esholt; and Smyth, of Heath and Holbeck.

This book currently sells for upwards of £400 in good condition.

A similar book to this on CDrom is Ralph Thoresby's "History of Leeds" (Ducatus Leodiensis) which was brought up to date by Dr. T.D. Whitaker in 1816.

This very large book is a very valuable source of information on the history of Leeds and surrounding towns and villages, and is of great use to local and family historians alike.
The maps show the relationship between the many parishes and clearly show which area to search for missing ancestors who may be in an adjoining parish.
The cd itself is very well produced and is very easy to search.
A copy of this book should be in the collection of every family researcher.
