This paper aims to present a critical review of the advantages and disadvantages that result from integrating ChatGPT into higher education. This study designed an online questionnaire. The online questionnaires were shared with undergraduate students at three Jordanian universities: Applied Science Private University, Jerash, and Petra via WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, Email, and LinkedIn. According to this research, the advantages of CHATGPT are saving time, getting immediate answers to various questions, writing for projects and homework, aiding in language learning, unified feedback, further learning material, and greater accessibility of information. Of course, there are disadvantages too: less critical thinking, only partial language capacity, incomplete knowledge of subjects, developing dependency on technology, misinformation, data privacy, and biased responses. The study concludes by recommending CHATGPT as a useful source of information, but its users must be sensitive to limitations and possible inaccuracies about the subject matter; fact-checking procedures must be done to establish whether the material is correct. Further, great care must be taken when using ChatGPT professionally to protect sensitive and secret information.

Linguistic modification in teacher’s talk is essential part of classroom interaction as it facilitates students’ understanding by reducing complexity of syntactic structures and the use of familiar structures and words. Data in this study were collected through classroom observation and informal chats with the teacher. 15 classroom observations were carried out during the First Semester of the academic year 2019/2020. When necessary, informal chats with the teacher took place at the end of observation session to get further clarification of what had happened in the classroom. The teacher talk can be described as having high frequency of self-repetition, exaggerated pronunciation, slower rate of speech, avoiding contractions, use of short sentences and phrases, paraphrasing, avoiding idioms and unfamiliar words, and pausing were marked in teacher talk. Phonological, semantic and syntactic modifications in teacher talk ensured input comprehensibility, avoided confusion and encouraged classroom participation. This study concludes that linguistic modifications in teacher talk are necessary to ensure input comprehensibility and support students’ engagement in classroom interactions. The Facebook posts are considered to be protest discourse, with ideological imprints of positive “we” in-group representations and negative “they” out-group descriptions. Utilizing a critical-discourse analysis method, this study reveals that Facebook posts were efficiently used to define the ethnonational identity of the participants and to describe their goals and activities, as well as to provide continual updates on the protests. The activists used linguistic strategies (e.g., rural terms, pronouns, and humorous posts). The activists purposefully used the indigenous dialect (i.e., the rural Jordanian East-Bank dialect) to express solidarity and address indigenous ethnic aspirations. Consequently, the success of the Fourth Circle protests can be summarized in three great achievements, which are: (1) Prime Minister Hani Mulki’s resignation; (2) cancellation of the income-tax law;...

The study also examines how the use of passive voice affects readers' attitudes towards political issues. The use of passive voice can lead to ambiguity, affecting the clarity of meaning by hiding the identity of the doer of the action. However, being vague about the doer of the action is primarily deliberate in political news to serve particular purposes. To collect data, the researchers refer to three newspapers, namely The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and The Guardian. Some articles discussing political issues were carefully chosen from those newspapers. The analysis of the results reveals that the passive voice is used in the selected political news reports to fulfill four main purposes; first, when the journalist emphasizes the action rather than the doer of the action, he omits by phrase, replacing it with marginal information. By adopting an affordance perspective, this study emphasis on how local Jordanian communities harness the power of Facebook during the 2018 Dead Sea flash flood. Through using an interpretive approach, three affordances of Facebook were identified, namely, disaster warning, volunteer mobilization, and the coordination of response and recovery. Then, the researchers examined how these affordances helped the Jordanian communities to respond to disaster situations and achieve social outcomes during the floods. Based on the data analysis, it has been noticed that Facebook changed the way individuals; organizations, activists, and government respond and act to the challenges posed by a disaster. This study contributes to the emerging literature on the use of Facebook in natural disasters in the Jordanian context. It argues how a pragmatically oriented process can perform the balance in human communication to avoid breakdowns of communication.
