The #OpenFoodConference in Leuven put the spotlight on #alternativeproteins as part of the solution to build more sustainable food systems. During the session "Strategies for protein diversification", the key messages were: promoting innovation for protein diversification and for different actors in the food supply chain; developing more education, research and up-scaling on alternative proteins; and coordination and dialogue between decision makers. Precision fermentation, cultured meat and plant-based products are increasingly being recognised in government strategies to reboot our food system, while providing consumers with delicious and nutritious products, using less land and protecting our environment. Thanks to the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2024 for organising this important event, which will help to open dialogue and encourage cooperation between the various stakeholders on the issue of protein diversification.
