What a crazy week. So I missed my flight to Ottawa. Apparently it was on the 24th of May and not the 25th, which was the original travel day. Instead I got to pay 750toflyoutonthemorningofthe25th.Fuck.Thatmorningmylaptopgotrunoverbyourtruck.Mymomputmymalletbagandlaptopbehindthetruckandmydaddecidedthatheneededtobackthetrucktothefrontdoortosaveusthe15feetdistancethatthetruckis.Wellitgotcrushed.NowIhavealaptopthatworks,exceptthescreenistotallyfucked.Ipickedupanewmonitoratagaragesaletodayfor750 to fly out on the morning of the 25th. Fuck. That morning my laptop got run over by our truck. My mom put my mallet bag and laptop behind the truck and my dad decided that he needed to back the truck to the front door to save us the 15 feet distance that the truck is. Well it got crushed. Now I have a laptop that works, except the screen is totally fucked. I picked up a new monitor at a garage sale today for 750toflyoutonthemorningofthe25th.Fuck.Thatmorningmylaptopgotrunoverbyourtruck.Mymomputmymalletbagandlaptopbehindthetruckandmydaddecidedthatheneededtobackthetrucktothefrontdoortosaveusthe15feetdistancethatthetruckis.Wellitgotcrushed.NowIhavealaptopthatworks,exceptthescreenistotallyfucked.Ipickedupanewmonitoratagaragesaletodayfor1.Other than that, the army is crappy, no surprise, but I am enjoying my time. I have a good room mate who I get along with and there is a good batch of people here. I've been thinking lately about what I want to do in regards to this whole music thing. I was originally thinking of it as a career choice but lately I have been swaying from that. It basically comes down to the competition. Music is all about networking and being ridiculously good... A lot like sports in a way, which is one of the reasons I wouldn't want to be a professional athlete. I was talking to another percussionist here who is probably around 30, and he was talking about when he made the decision to make music into a hobby rather than a career. He spoke of how he suddenly was able to enjoy everything he was doing so much more because there is not nearly as much pressure to perform. Don't get me wrong, I would still perform and do all the things that I do, but I just don't know how I could make a living doing that. There's military bands, but the military is just so ridiculous that I wouldn't want to stick with that in any serious career-related way. Being a reserve and doing the once-a-week rehearsal thing is fine with me.We'll see, I guess, but the amount of trouble that I'd have to go through to make it a viable career option is just ridiculous. Wonder what else I would do for the rest of my life, though... Like I said, I would definitely like to keep music around, but I just can't imagine what crazy amounts of practicing and networking I would have to do to not starve to death. |
