_This community has been rather dead since I created it in March. The growing season in the northern hemisphere is half over, so let's revive it! Tell us what your garden is doing right now._I'll give it a shot. ;)We've had crazy weather. All the rain earlier in the year gave my roses fungus, and all kinds of succulent weeds sprang up. All the recent heat has killed off a few of my non-xeriscape flowers (gerbera daisies), but the rest seem to be doing well.I picked up several good plants at the Native Plant sale this spring. The globe mallow has doubled in size already. The lambs ear has also taken off. I love the little purple flowers, and apparently so do bees. Firecracker penstamin has done really well, also. I love the bright flowers. Some evening primrose seed that I planted last year actually came up this year. Quite a surprise. I've heard it's an aggressive, drought tolerant flower, so I'm hoping it fills in all the dry, bare space under my juniper trees. I'm having a little trouble with bugs - haven't been able to catch any to see just what is eating my plants. Otherwise life is good.

Hello,This community has been rather dead since I created it in March. The growing season in the northern hemisphere is half over, so let's revive it! Tell us what your garden is doing right now.Mine is suffering from a combination of dry weather and a broken irrigation season, which we've been too lazy to fix until last night. Heavy rain in early June made us complacent about irrigation, but even my drought tolerant plants need some water. Many of my flowers are just starting to bloom, including butterfly bush, coreopsis, and "autumn joy" sedum. Others got their first heavy-duty dead-heading today, including gaillardia, yarrow, and meadow sage (which, btw, has a horrible fragrance, like someone who hasn't showered in a while). I'm hoping these will be back in bloom in a couple of weekends, when we're having a cook-out with a bunch of guests.

Anybody got some good planter ideas for plants that won't dry out INSTANTLY in the Las Vegas 120 degrees, 0% humidity climate? Also, should I get the glazed terracotta pots to retain some moisture?

Have been doing a little work in the garden this week. At this time of year, dealing with the temperature fluctuations is more of a concern than managing water. April in Colorado can vary quite a bit! I put up some Wall of Waters for the first time this year. Early next week I'm going to populate them with a tomato, pepper, and cucumber plant (one for each of the three water devices). Otherwise, I would have to wait at least until mid-May to be safe from frost. I put my hand in one yesterday to test the temperature, and it was decidedly warmer than the air -- so maybe they really work. Many vegetables may hate the cold, but not the weeds. :P And I have crabgrass, some unidentified but ugly species. It's formed a decent sized patch, maybe six or eight square feet already. Unless someone tells me a better way, I think I'm going to have to Roundup the whole area, then resod. Sigh.

I was looking for a xeriscape community, but I couldn't find one -- so here's one of my own. I live in Denver, Colorado, the birthplace of xeriscape, or water-wise landscaping. My garden, a xeriscape design, is entering its third growing season right now. Here are some pictures from last summer:( See our landscape...Collapse )
