At the meeting of the Philosophical Review Club in March 2022, John Monfasani's volume 'Vindicatio Aristotelis' was the subject of a discussion. The book brings together a critical edition and a doctrinal study of two major writings by George of Trebizond, namely the 'In perversionem Problematum Aristotelis quodam Theodoro Cage editam et problematice Aristotelis philosophiae protectio', and the 'Comparatio philosophorum Platonis et Aristotelis'. This note presents a critical discussion of Monfasani's edition of these two texts. It first considers the Protectio, discussed by Riccardo Saccenti; then the Comparatio, reviewed by Luca Burzelli.

After commenting on Aristotle’s Phys. VIII, t.c. 15-18, Fontana delves into the problems of the eternity of the world and the causality exercised by God on the universe. In Fontana’s exposition, the Aristotelian thought contrasts sharply with the religious doctrine of creation. Fontana shows the incompatibility of Aristotle’s ‘physical’ arguments from the point of view of the three revealed religions. Moreover, he strives to provide a new interpretation of Aristotle himself, in order to Christianise his thought. The text is accompanied by a commentary of ancient and medieval sources, and an introduction to the debate, which compares Fontana’s position
with that of his rival professor, Pietro Pomponazzi.

Abstract:
This article considers the issues of free will, predestination and
justification, as explored by Gasparo Contarini in his private and public letters
of the 1530s. Contarini had been developing a theory of the causal bounds
since his youth at the university. Later, from 1530 he mingled these philosophical
issues with religious problems. This double approach, which combines the
authority of Aristotle with the texts of St. Paul, characterizes three famous
letters which immediately circulated as public pamphlets, i.e., De libero arbitrio,
De praedestinatione and De justificatione. Finally, the article considers Contarini’s
position during the Colloquy of Regensburg (1541), where the cardinal proposed
a compromise theory of justification, which was closely connected with
the aforesaid letters: indeed, he pointed at a middle way «between Scylla and
Charybdis», i.e., between Augustine and Pelagius, for which the salvation of
the soul requires both divine grace and personal active participation.

With the expression «system of atoms», Hegel does not address only to Democritus’ ancient doctrines concerning the aggregation of atoms, but also to a specific political system of the modern age: namely, that of the individualistic society, which has been developing since the fall of the Roman Empire. Hegel started employing the atomistic metaphor in Jena, when he described human associations with a scientific language taken from physical theories. Then, this connection is renewed in every following treatise as well as in the Berliner academic courses, in order to criticize a specific political model, that is Rousseau’s social contract.

The two treatises "Modus concionandi" and "Instructio pro concionatoribus" were written by Gasparo Contarini for the preachers of Belluno between 1538 and 1541. With these works, Contarini explores three aspects of the predication. First, he focuses on a rhetorical issue: the language of the predication must be adequate for an inexpert audience. Second, he suggests to censure the most complex theological issues from the field of the predication since the audience could not understand such technical concepts like predestination and causal bounds. Third, he reveals that the aim of the predication is to help a civil ethic and to avoid social disorders – like those triggered by Augustinian preachers. In the texts Contarini also shows his debt to Pietro Pomponazzi, who in his Tractatus and Apologia provided both a civic paradigm and an accusation of the bad preachers.

In the second part of the article, it is explored how the treatise reached a widespread diffusion and success in the universities, thanks to its clear exposition of Aristotle's doctrine. A special attention is devoted to those Renaissance philosophers and professors who quoted Contarini in order to defend Aristotle's natural philosophy against the new theories of Telesio and Campanella.

The aim of this article is to analyze more closely the structure of the treatise, its main arguments and the most relevant authorities used by Contarini – both openly and silently. In this context, it is important to reconsider the role of Aquinas in his argumentation and to underline the profound influence of Avicenna’s De anima. Indeed, the Persian philosopher provided Contarini with several fundamental concepts for the defense of immortality, namely substantial form and perfection, which only appear
capable of confronting Pomponazzi’s questions on the role of phantasy.

His wide range of interests covered metaphysics, elementary physics, but also political history and biblical exegesis. He was an important philosophical interlocutor of Pietro Pomponazzi, Girolamo Fracastoro, and Juan Sepulveda. As ambassador of Venice, he traveled to Germany and Spain. Here he soon became close friend with the Emperor Charles V and often engaged him in conversations about their common natural-istic interests. Finally, he was appointed cardinal while he still was a layman. He was personally involved in the reform of the Church, of the administrative offices, and of the role of the bishops. He was also probably the last strong advocate of a reconciliation between Lutherans and Catholics. With this aim he presided over the failed Diet of Regens-burg, in 1541.

In medieval and early modern natural philosophy, very few issues were as controversial as the nature of the elements. From the thirteenth up until the sixteenth century, European thinkers discussed this problem with growing interest. Defining the nature of the elements was key to deciphering the very structure of the universe and the essence of things. Along with five primary texts, here edited for the first time, this book discusses one of the most original contributions to this debate, that of Renaissance philosopher Pietro Pomponazzi (d. 1525). Pomponazzi’s account, developed in university lectures, holds significance for two reasons. First, it provides a thorough description of the most influential doctrines on the elements presented by medieval scholars, opening a window onto three hundred years of prior discussions on the topic. Second, Pomponazzi also develops his own views on the issue, explicitly defining them as ‘heretical’ to emphasise his departure from all opinions expressed before him.
