international status aspirations the ruling elites of Armenia
had in 2008-2020, as well as how and by what means they
tried to gain those statuses. In order to reach this goal the
following research objectives - questions were defined:
• What national roles were adopted by the ruling elites
led by Serzh Sargsyan and Nikol Pashinyan and what
international statuses in line with them did they aspire
to?
• How and by what means did they try to run those
roles and obtain those statuses?
• How did those roles-statuses develop? Have they
remained unchanged or have they evolved? Have the
adopted roles-statuses transformed substantially?

This paper will address two research questions: why did the trilateral cooperation emerge in 2015 and not (much) earlier and what is/are the primary driver(s) behind it given the fact that these states have already established a regional organization called GUAM? The paper is organized as follows: the first section briefly reviews the foreign policy contours of Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova and then discusses the rapprochement of their national interests amid European integration. The second section unpacks the emergence of the trilateral cooperation and approaches the format from three aspects: EU affairs, economic interdependence and hard politics. The third section weighs in on the EU’s influence on the development of the trilateral cooperation. The conclusion sums up the main findings of the research.

Georgia’s possible membership in NATO looms large not only in terms of politics in the South Caucasus but increasingly in the tense relations between Russia and the West. In July 2018, NATO extended an official invitation to Macedonia, thereby processing its eighth enlargement. Zooming in on Georgia and Macedonia’s performance on membership requirements is a one-of-a-kind litmus test of perspectives of Georgia’s membership in NATO. The comparative analysis unveils that Georgia has outperformed Macedonia in all key areas of reforms and that NATO still pays more attention to geopolitical aspects of membership, rather compatibility with the Alliance’s requirements.

The article also presents the steps, taken by Turkey, Georgia and Azerbaijan towards the realization of the Model Highway Initiative Baku-Tbilisi-Batumi-Trabzon.

Based on the analysis of main developments it is concluded that despite the considerable progress the trilateral cooperation has been of limited nature. The research defines the foreign policy goals that Turkey, Georgia and Azerbaijan have pursued through trilateral military cooperation.

The authorities met growing demand by importing more gas from regional suppliers, especially Azerbaijan. Starting in September 2015, the Georgian government devoted particular attention to addressing the need for additional natural gas imports. In addition to renewed negotiations with the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR), its main gas supplier, Georgia looked to alternative sources for import. Those sources included Russia and Iran.
