It introduces a new measure of disease specific health literacy that is grounded in the everyday life problem-solving dimensions of prevention and detection and examines the effect of residents' connections to community-based health information resources. People connect to health information sources that are available in their local communities, including interpersonal, media, and community organizational communication resources. These resources do not exist in isolation as they are joined into a network of health information resources through everyday communication activities, hence forming a community-based health information network. We expect to find positive relationships between residents' connections to community-based health information network (RC-CHIN) and health literacy. The primary hypothesis is that health literacy is influenced by residents' connection to RC-CHIN in addition to socio-econo...

Using an online survey conducted on the issue of fine dust pollution in South Korea, this study found that science news attention was associated with greater anxiety and anger about the issue, whereas political news attention was associated with fear and sadness/depression (as well as anxiety and anger). Furthermore, mediation analysis showed that science news attention indirectly influenced support for preventive policy through anxiety, whereas political news attention indirectly influenced punitive policy support through anger and fear. Theoretical and practical implications of this study are discussed.

We investigated three urban communities in Seoul with in-depth interviews (<i>n</i> = 30) and 12 focus group interview meetings (<i>n</i> = 120). We conceptualized two types of community storytelling actions to address differences – difference-reducing community storytelling (DRCS) and difference-managing community storytelling (DMCS). We also identified four neighborhood relational types – denial, rivalry, cohabitation, and coexistence – in the study areas as interacting in various forms with community storytelling to address the issue of difference in urban neighborhoods.

The first purpose of this study was to test the scales of difference-managing community storytelling (DMCS) and difference-reducing community storytelling (DRCS) as two communicative actions for addressing differences in urban neighborhoods. The second was to identify socioeconomic and community engagement variables correlated with the two scales. We used both qualitative and quantitative data collected in Seoul by adopting a mixed-method research design, and the study was theoretically guided by communication infrastructure theory. Based on exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, we confirmed the two-dimensional model of community storytelling, with DMCS being positively related to integrated connectedness to a community storytelling network (ICSN) and all of the community engagement variables included in the current study. In comparison, DRC...

Based on survey data collected in Seoul, Korea, the study proposes four types of individuals depending on how they manage and form opinions on issues: opinion givers/seekers, opinion givers, opinion seekers, and nondiscussants. The study result indicates that those who both give and seek opinions are more connected to various types of media, have higher curating skills, and are more likely to participate in offline and online political activities than others. The implication of opinion givers/seekers in relation to the traditional meaning of opinion leadership will be further discussed.

Previous studies have extensively reported on personal hope and its outcomes. Although a few studies have suggested the concept of collective or social hope, there is no instrument to assess the construct. In this study, we created a 5item scale, drawing on Snyder’s hope theory, and collected two sets of survey data online. Analysis of these data sets revealed that the new scale was structurally unidimensional and internally consistent. In association with Snyder’s State Hope Scale, the Social Hope Scale showed convergent and discriminant validity. The social hope construct also exhibited theoretically meaningful relationships with political efficacy and self-construal (concurrent validity). Finally, social hope was higher for those who had participated in certain types of social activism than it was for those who had not (predictive validity). These results suggest that the Social Hope Scale is a reliable and valid self-report measure of hopeful thinking for society.

Online survey data ( n = 901) were collected from adult residents of Seoul in the summer of 2013. The results indicate that various ICT channels (especially websites, online news sites, blogs, online cafés, and smartphone apps) could potentially be customized to serve urban neighborhoods. Positive attitudes and subjective norms related to localized ICT use behavior were significant factors for use of almost all ICT channels considered in the current study. Individuals’ integrated connectedness to community storytelling network was a consistently significant and positive factor in relation to both experience and intention of localized uses of ICTs. More and more, individuals turn to social media and Internet sites to share health information and experiences. Although online health information seeking occurs worldwide, limited empirical studies exist examining cross-cultural differences in perceptions about user-generated, experience-based information compared to expertise-based information sources. To investigate if cultural variations exist in patterns of online health information seeking, specifically in perceptions of online health information sources. It was hypothesized that Koreans and Hongkongers, compared to Americans, would be more likely to trust and use experience-based knowledge shared in social Internet sites, such as social media and online support groups. Conversely, Americans, compared to Koreans and Hongkongers, would value expertise-based knowledge prepared and appro...

An online survey was conducted with 225 participants who attended at least one of the candlelight protests demanding President Park’s impeachment that were held in South Korea over a span of 27 weeks in 2016 and 2017. We found that protest participants’ experiences could be classified into five categories: independent, entertaining, reflective, solidary, and distributive. Based on these five PPEs, we identified three clusters of participant groups in the candlelight protests: carnivalesque, consumerist, and autonomous/critical. The three groups were different not only in terms of their PPEs but also their media use patterns and sociodemographic characteristics.

In-person interviews were conducted with 1,000 residents in Seoul, Korea, in 2011.
