[ Huh. ] Fri, Jan 8th '10 - 10:47am
It would seem that Ken Block is going to be making the transition from Rally America to the WRC, racing a Ford on the same team as Chris Atkinson. If I recall correctly, this would make him the only US driver currently competing there. It's a shame he's not competing in a Subie, but this otherwise pleases me.In other news, Seb wins the '09 WRC by one lousy point. *grumble* stupid bonnet latches *grumble*

[ S. Loeb: The Failening! ] Tue, Dec 1st '09 - 9:08am
I can only assume that I posses some sort of subconscious super power to screw up someone's day. After my last post on the matter, Seb rolled his car correcting a pace note in Greece, destroyed the steering in his car by hitting a tree stump in Poland, and just plain failed to keep up with Mikko in Finland. He is now number two behind Mikko overall in the WRC and Citroen is loosing ground to Ford.I am most pleased, and thus, am a horrible person. ^_^P.S. Happy birthday sandpanther!

[ Pondering matters World Rally... ] Mon, Oct 26th '09 - 12:10pm
Why am I such the Sebastian Loeb anti-fan? It doesn't matter to me who wins as long as it's not him. Fifty four career rally wins and six world championships should tell you the man has some skill. I am by no means the rally super-fan. I have not, for example, ever appeared in the background of a picture in a rallying publication in which Petter Solberg waves my giant Subaru flag about. I have no reason to care as much as I do, but for whatever reason, whenever I watch the '09 WRC coverage on HD Theater I am filled with a desire to see this Frenchman meet with disaster. I have a need to see him overcook a turn and take a one-way trip down an embankment. This may speak a few unkind words as regard to my character. It was nice to see him down in the rankings on day one of Rally Portugal. Especially since he was behind Marcus Grönholm who was sporting a shiny new Prodrive Subaru WRX no less. Marcus was holding the number four slot on day two as well. Who knows how well he would've done if he hadn't clipped that tree. Damned if Seb didn't manage to crawl all the way back to the top by the end though. It might have been a different story though if Latvala hadn't decided to roll his Focus down a hill seventeen times. Seb blew a turn in the second stage costing him 18 seconds, so he's by no means infallible, but maybe he's just too good. Perhaps it's just human nature to see such a well functioning machine and wonder what would happen if a monkey wrench happened to fall in the works. I don't buy into the general dislike of all things French that seems to be the trend in America the past few years. I just don't really get it. This was the country after all that played a key, if not crucial, role in the revolutionary war. They did go into debt to the tune of over three billion tournois to help us out. "Because it's French" has never been a good reason with me. Except for here, with a French man driving a French car who is thoroughly trouncing the competition. Why can't he get up close and personal with a hinkelstein?

[ My take on SG:U ] Wed, Oct 7th '09 - 1:57pm
The jury's still out on SG:U for me. On one hand I'm pleased that I at least have a tangential piece of work in a sci-fi universe that I'm familiar with now that BSG has ended its run, but I'd like to not feel as though I'm being fed broken glass in the form of bad MacGuffin filled plot at the same time. They've certainly established a remote/exotic location with seemingly little chance of crossover for existing SG1/SGA characters outside of the first hour of the pilot, but Stargate Atlantis started out the same way as well and we saw how long that lasted. They're also playing up character ambiguity to the hilt in a couple places with the characters of Dr. Nicholas Rush and Ronald Greer. While they're technically on the side of the good guys, we're not exactly eager to share a beer with them. It could be the story writers are angling for interpersonal conflicts and environment as the obstacles to be overcome rather than trotting out the "Ye Olde Bad Guys" trope that's been done (perhaps a tad overdone) in SG1 and SGA. We've also got a computer nerd/RPG/generic smart guy character in the form of Eli Wallace, which I hope the writers are able to handle without him coming off as a caricature, although it's hard not to feel as though the writers/producers are pandering a little bit to a large section of their intended demographic here. "Hey. He plays MMORPGs and quotes Star Wars. I totally relate to him!". Aside from the "nerd" and the aforementioned chaotic neutral characters, no one else really comes off as anything other than standard character ingredients one would need for a sci-fi adventure. We've got our lawful good figures in the form of a Colonel Everett Young, seemingly in charge of everyone, and Airman Matthew Scott as our pseudo-team leader. It's pretty much your standard SG team formula that's tried and true. That said, at the end of the two hour pilot no one came off as particularly likable. Stargate Atlantis managed this easily with characters such as Carson Beckett, and followed it up later on with the McKay/Zelenka dynamic.Overall it feels as though we've entered the Star Trek: Voyager phase of the Stargate universe experience, with SG1 and SGA having done the TNG and DS9 thing respectively. I'm hoping that I'm wrong, and that the show's creative force will be able to pull off something truly exciting to watch. Tune in Friday to find out.

[ As seen at Kuroneko-ya! ] Fri, Jul 10th '09 - 3:43pm
A little while back, there seemed to be some buzz generated over a Jalapeño cheesecake I brought to racerxmachina's Cinco de Mayo shindig.I finally forced myself to sit down and combine the two recipes I used into a third, more terrifying recipe. For the curious among you, click now on the link and gaze upon the madness. Muhahahaha!!!

[ Accomplishments. I has them. ] Wed, May 27th '09 - 11:01am
So, in the last week I've...* Survived heading a department I've never run before with only four months notice.* Kept a zero staff casualty rating in said department, although quite honestly it looked like it'd be hit-or-miss there for a while.* Almost helped secure a giant Neko Bus for ConOps, but lost out to a much higher bidder.* Had to replace my television set cause it decided to go belly up while I was at con.....Oh, and I asked out a pretty girl!eeeeeeeee!

[ He Shall from Time to Time... ] Mon, Jan 5th '09 - 1:51pm
The state of the Ko-chan remains strong.I decided to drive home this year rather than fly, partially due to the high price of airfare this season and also because I'm loony. I did get to do a little endurance driving as a result. Harriet managed to make it all the way from home base to Chiriaco Summit on a single tank of petrol, a trip of 492 miles at just over 37 MPG. I was a bit nervous running that close to empty. Not even the car thought we were gonna make it to the top of that hill. The holidays went well. Anyone who's seen the Kochan family Christmas feasts knows they are not for those on a diet. I'd already decided to throw mine out the window. When the menu over two days consists of your grandmother's pierogi, Polish sausage (both smoked and not-smoked), walnut bread (I managed to smuggle a loaf back with me), custard French toast made with panettone, deep fried turkey (OMG more on this later), and topped off with your own raspberry cheesecake... well clearly it is not the time for Weight Watchers. Despite all that I found my net weight gain/loss at this morning's weigh-in to be only +2 lbs. Much better than I expected. The turkey came out very nicely done this year. I am now solidly behind the belief that turkey is best prepared deep fried. Apparently, my Dad has been formulating a new flavor injection strategy which worked out well. We brought the oil up to 350 degrees right when we put in the bird. The immersion brought the temperature down to 325, which is where I kept it until it was done about thirty minutes later. That bird was oozing with juices when we carved into. The family is doing well overall, although the economic downturn is hitting my sister and her family. I'm hoping they pull through. My Dad got some home theater stuff for Xmas. The man who has up to this point sufficed with a 20-inch television and finds operating a TiVo to be intimidating should by now be enjoying the offerings of high definition television. He managed to find a five year old plasma TV on the cheap from a FOX sports grill that was closing down. He got all the other bits he needed as gifts. The universal remote that works it all? I gifted it to my Mom in a fit of deviousness. I got home after a week and proceeded to take a vacation from my vacation which turned out to be mostly restful. I still had to do battle with my server which has been falling over with machine check exceptions since the end of November. At this point, the only components that haven't been replaced are the drives and the RAID controller (and technically the case as well, but come on). It's also been a little rough getting back on the regular sleep schedule. Here's hoping everyone out there had a warm time with family and friends, with best wishes for the year to come.

[ That was bracing! ] Fri, Oct 10th '08 - 10:45am
It's chilly mornings like these that give Sasha a little bit more pep then usual which in turn makes my commute in the morning much more fun. Of course I have to grab hold of a mug of hot leaf juice to get the feeling back in my hands.I'm thinking it may be time to look into some cold weather riding gear.

[ Childhood revisited upon us ] Tue, Jul 8th '08 - 8:59am
One of the things I get a chuckle out of is what people tend to do when they grow up, gather up some coin, and decide to buy themselves a chunk of their childhood to play with. Invariably, hijinx ensue shortly thereafter.Take the case of Chris Thrash for example, and his personal Rock-afire Explosion installation. Of course, he's started to put it to good use. Really, the choreography is quite good.

Mon, Jun 23rd '08 - 10:33am
So far I've ridden Sasha, my new Vespa, pretty much every day since Thursday. I feel I'm really starting to get the hang of it. It's going well, but I've yet to be in a situation where some car does something bone headed and suddenly I'm in a very bad position. That will be a very interesting day. I thusly remain cautious.( Click for scooter related ramblings...Collapse )

[ I might be crazy. ] Thu, Jun 19th '08 - 2:17pm
The jury's still out. I've certainly accused others of the condition. I'm in possession of an M-class permit, a helmet, gloves, jacket, boots, and an August reservation for the basic MSF rider class. All because, this past Saturday, I got a Vespa.( Click through to see my bitchin' hog!Collapse )
