The objectives of this research were twofold: (1) explore the problems that exist among the girls in weekly boarding at Chadiza Day Secondary School; (2) determine how problems among the girls in weekly boarding day secondary schools impede their education. This study used a mixed method research employing a case study. The study sample consisted of 38 participants: 12 girls, 10 boys, 10 teachers (5 female teachers and 5 male teachers), 2 guidance teachers, 2 administrators and 2 parents. Participants were sampled using snowball, purposive and convenience sampling methods. Data were collected through questionnaires, interview guide, observation guide and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and were analysed qualitatively using thematic data analysis technique and quantitatively employing descriptive data analysis method. As such, this study established issues that girls, who do weekly boarding...

It was undertaken in Kabwe urban District, covering three institutions: Nkrumah University, Zambian Open University and Mulungushi University simple random sampling technique was used to select the three institutions and respondents. This study used a descriptive research method, employing the use of a questionnaire and interview guide to collect data. Thematic data analysis was the predominant method employed in the study. Findings indicate that many factors in the home, school and circumstantial environments impede participation and performance of distance education students in accessing and being retained in their much-desired formal education at university and college levels. Furthermore, findings revealed that distance education students are more disadvantaged in accessing education at tertiary level ...

The study was anti-positivistic and adopted the mixed methods research. Targeting Kasenengwa District, 50 respondents: 8 head teachers of all the 8 secondary schools in the District and 42 heads of departments were sampled conveniently. Data collected was analyzed descriptively and thematically. Daniel Goleman’s theory of Emotional Intelligence guided this study. The major findings of this study show that secondary school head teachers on the average were poorer in Emotional awareness (EA) than in Emotional Management (EM), Social Emotional Awareness (ESA) and Relationship Management (RM). Nevertheless, the competences of EM, SEA and RM were effectively functioning but only needed further strengthening. Cooperatively and comparatively, the younger head teacher...

Today, there is an increase in the number of intergenerational sexual relations in the District because of the influx of migrants from other parts of Zambia and world over, who want to take part in mining in the area, as well as engage into business. Using a retrospective research approach, the study targeted all males and females engaged in the vice, sampled by snowballing. Findings of the study were analysed descriptively and thematically. Findings reveal the following: 1. That poverty is the major drive towards intergenerational sexual relations. 2. That though poverty may drive individuals to engage in the vice's other reasons such as peer pressure, pleasure, desire for luxuries, having an edge over others, culture etc. may be the cause for intergenerational sex 3. Despite well-known consequences of engaging in the vice socially sanctioned attitudes and behaviours are linked to cross-generational sex. 4. People's aspirations and expectations may be influenced by the size of the economy such that as the economy keeps growing new needs and desires consistent with the economy may be the drives of behavior. This study recommends that the people be equipped with necessary tools that will enable them to find alternatives to replace the need to engage in sexual relations with older men and women as a means of survival. Another important recommendation is that mandatory sensitization should be undertaken by investing companies to avert the social backlash that arise in such situations.

Open and Distance Learning (ODL) institutions face challenges offering quality tertiary education... more Open and Distance Learning (ODL) institutions face challenges offering quality tertiary education. A notable area of interest is guidance and counselling. It is common knowledge that a practising counsellor ought to be ground in both theory and practice. Providing practical experience to attain quality guidance and counselling tertiary education can be challenging in an ODL institution for students do not learn in a face-to-face manner. The aspect of ‘ontraining’ or ‘hands on’ experience for ODLs to guide and counsel a real client in a real situation is elusive. In Zambia, private ODL Universities neither house counselling clinics at their main campus nor at their regional centres. The study purpose was to explore open distance learners’ internship experiences in Guidance and Counselling programmes with a view of improvement. The objective of the study was to establish whether learners undergo practical experiential learning. The study was a case study by research design and was qua...

This paper presents the findings of a study that sought to establish the emerging and digital technologies being used to enhance the teaching and learning of ODL students with disabilities at Nkhruma University. The study used a case study design. The population comprised all students with visual and hearing impairment under ODL and their lecturers. A total sample of fifty-five (55) participants was employed and snowball sampling technique was utilized. The instruments used for data collection were interview guides and observation schedules. Data was analyzed thematically. The findings revealed that emerging technologies such as the use of information and communication technology were used by both students with visual and hearing impairment to learn effectively and lecturers to teach effectively. It was also revealed that digital technologies...

A descriptive research design was used targeting 96 respondents who were selected to participate in collecting primary data which was analyzed thematically. The study used 'Social Learning Theory' expounded by Albert Bandura which stresses the importance of observation and imitation of behavioural samples, which meet moral standards of the society. Through this theory, it is hopeful that learners will observe and imitate positive community behaviours which will be integrated with Civic Education's integrative approaches in developing moral and civic competencies in the community. The common themes that emerged were: human rights recognition, instilling feeling of patriotism, social justice promotion, respect for the Rule of Law and molding moral conduct in society. After thorough engagement with literature and primary data provided, the study recommends the formulation of a National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) which will be responsible for the education of Zambians on civic matters, especially those who are still in secondary schools; and school administrators should collaborate with cooperating partners to act as role models in teaching Civic Education. This study has highlighted key areas which need to be considered in teaching Civic Education in secondary schools.

It focused on challenges faced by teachers in providing educational services to children with special education needs at the early childhood education level in the targeted government schools. The rationale of the study was to solicit trends-in-practice among ECE teachers through their stories, thus partly help other teachers who shall read findings of this study tap into their engagements with ECE learners; and partly nurture children’s development in a right way in early years. Qualitative methodology was used because it allowed for in-depth realities faced in 5 schools in Chipata. The study employed a descriptive research method for two years from 2016 to 2017, comprising five primary schools in Chipata District, Zambia, were conveniently sampled for the study. With the addition of face-to-face residential schools, ZAOU students have the opportunity to access expert academic staff, quality learning resources and support services, plus meet and collaborate with other students. But how much do these professionals know about academic counselling? What are the students’ views of the academic counselling provided at ZAOU? Unquestionable, the ODL model provides students with personal control allowing them to study anywhere, anytime and at their own pace. But the question is to what extent? Is it embracive? The study is informed by findings of a phenomenological study that took place from 2006 to 2016. The phenomenological data was collected with retrospective data, triangulation and document review. The majority of inhabitants in the shanty dwelling places of the city of Lusaka enjoy the 4, 600 flowering plant species, where 211 are endemic. Mwitwa [1] contends that over 75% of all Zambians benefit from traditional medicine voluntarily or involuntarily. The inhabitants who are migrants from the rural areas come with hard to change, stereotype mind-sets regarding conventional-traditional medicine with the majority seeming to prefer the use of traditional herbs to conventional medicine (herein also referred to as biomedical medicine). The findings were that there is general ignorance regarding the side effects of using traditional medicine. One's level of education does not determine one's use of traditional medicine. Participants of the study were of the view that access and use of traditional should not be regulated. Media advertisements of traditional medicine are unregulated and uncertainty surrounds the efficacy of traditional medicine. Use of traditional medicine in both men and women was often motivated by love and sexually related reasons.
