Around 1900, rubber was part of tires, cables, and a myriad of everyday objects. The strong demand for this raw material sparked a global rubber boom between 1890 and 1913, which also shaped the German colony of Cameroon. Die colonial rubber industry, however, was not only based on coercion and violence. Rather, Africans used the demand for rubber and labor for their own social mobility. European companies were able to draw on a variety of different forms of labor mobilization, which Africans manipulated to their own interests. What emerged was a colonial labor force which not only challenged their European employers but also the local African societies.

Therefore, the conference, which was postponed and then digitized due to Covid-19, had very good timing.[1] It aimed at, as Bettina Brockmeyer put it, bringing together research, arts, and civil society in analyzing colonial memory in Germany as well as in the rest of Europe and, importantly, the Global South. However, even before the conference started, some scholars criticized that there was no speaker from Namibia – the former German colony with the most troubled relationship with the former metropolis.[2] Nevertheless, whatever reason led to this shortcoming, the genocide of the Herero and Nama people was a recurring theme throughout many presentations as well as in the welcoming speech of undersecretary of state, MICHELLE MÜNTEFERING (Berlin). Rather than being a tame conference, as feared by some, its sound was rather radical.

It concentrates the knowledge of scholars of the various local contexts in Africa, Asia, Latin America as well as Oceania, in which German colonial actors were economically active.
