Winner of the 1991 Heisman trophy, Howard's acrobatic catches made him one of the most electrifying players ever to play the game. At 5-9, 176 pounds, Howard became the first receiver in Big Ten history to lead the conference in scoring (90) as he set or tied five NCAA records and 12 single-season Michigan records. Voted Most Valuable Player by his teammates, the All-American set standards for most points scored (138), most touchdowns (23), and most consecutive games with a scoring catch (19). Won the Heisman by the second largest margin of victory in trophy's history; His 640 first place votes (85 percent) were the most ever for a Heisman winner. Recognized as Player-of- the-Year by receiving the Walter Camp Trophy and the Maxwell Award. The Big Ten Athlete-of-the-Year also captured UPI and AP Offensive Player-of-the-Year honors as well as being named the Dunlop Pro-Am Athlete-of-the-Year. Howard was a first round pick of the Washington Redskins.
