The library version numbers indicate API/ABI compatibility and should not be bumped for cosmetic reasons. Releases should be numbered consecutively, so the next release will be 0.4.9 or possibly 0.5.0 (I don't think it's time for 1.0.0 quite yet).

We have discussed this several times on mplayer lists, theoretically no software reaches a 1.0 point. You can say that this is a valuable state, release it as 1.0 and let work on further versions as 1.{1,2,3,4}, 2.0, ...
