Applets certainly are not going to be ditched entirely, but we do have to face the current trends in the industry which are decidedly away from plugins. Although we dedicate engineers to the applet and will continue to do so, we have to be pragmatic and realize that native application deployment is our best opportunity to have a bullet-proof and robust deployment scenario, which also has no associated security issues.

I think as for offline desktop deployment things are currently handled well. On the other hand applets are seriously crippled. I personally think that this is a really good area where Java could excel and consequently draw in a big percentage of developers. Flash is dying and developers are getting aware that HTML5 isn't what it was promised to be, so there is really no good technology for creating feature rich web apps. Sure you can use HTML5 to create nice looking document based web apps but not more than that, at least not currently. I just wish I could deploy my apps with this beautifully crafted JavaFX controls through the web seamlessly and painlessly (just like flash does it) :-) Thanks, best regards, -- Pedro Duque Vieira
