That's not true. In the Unicode BMP fallback font, you can easily differentiate all Unicode characters (in the BMP): http://scripts.sil.org/UnicodeBMPFallbackFont
That's a cute hack that offers a method of applying the "just use hex" argument to any editor with multi-font support, but it certainly isn't usable for actual work.
