Being the Unicode novice that I am, I'd feel better if someone proofread FAQ 4.102:

Hm, I think you've got the ordering wrong. Suggestion #1 would be to fix the application to do explicit encoding/decoding. Suggestion #2 would be to change the site default encoding by adding a sitecustomize.py. I'd leave direct hacking of site.py out of the suggestions.
