Are you sure that people aren't going to want to format numbers as they do with % (e.g. %4.2f)?
I'm sure they will, but I think they should just use %-interpolation then. ;) I'm personally not interested in supporting that for (default) $-strings.
You should post the PEP to c.l.py.announce, too. (Perhaps you have and it's still sitting in the queue.)
