3.0 will have no backwards compatibility allowances. Whenever someone says "remove this in 3.0" they mean exactly that. There will be too many incompatibilities in 3.0 to be bothered with deprecating them all; most likely we'll have to have some kind of (semi-)automatic conversion tool.
Deprecation in 2.x is generally done to indicate that a feature will be removed in 2.y for y >= x+1.
