At least I still have this on my todo list.
I've posted patch #1503046 to sourceforge which implements option #2 by checking for inflateCopy() in the system zlib during the configure step.
Thank you! As this involves autotools magic, I hope Martin (who assigned the patch to himself) can look over it instead of me.
