Just so I understand exactly what you mean by "leave it out of the public API", let me ask: are you saying you don't want to document the function? Do you not want to include it in setobject.h? No tests for it?

If all you're suggesting is to stick an underscore in front of the name to indicate "it's something special", I could live with that, although I don't see much benefit.
