My only concern about this is that it wouldn't be possible for other authors to provide 3rd party packages as (for instance) db.mysqldb because of the way package importing works.

that could be addressed by a plugin facility in db/init.py

(or by allowing installation tools to add redirection modules to the db directory...)

And I'd prefer 'database.sqlite' rather than 'db.sqlite'.

and extensible_markup_language.document_object_model over xml.dom, I presume ? ;-)
