I have a few attempts for my purposes that are written in Python (an obvious bootstrapping problem for building Python itself :). Only for the theorist. As you, we use build tools for our stackless branch written in python. There exist successfully built python versions back from the nineties, which can be considered "external" tools for all practical purposes.
Building python with python is really nifty.
