Paul Moore got some Cygwin developers persuaded to implement support for msvcr90 [1]. The coded was added a few days ago [2]. This means that users are still able to use MinGW to compile extensions when we switch to VS 2008 as default compiler on Windows.
I'm not sure how many people are interested in the topic but some may be glad to hear that MinGW is still supported.
Thanks for letting people know about this Christian! I'm waiting until there's a released binary with this included (or I get time to work out how to build my own!), and then I'll work up a patch for distutils to make this work.
