No Glyph, you are not alone! I don't even like the OS putting stuff like Pictures, Music, Movies, Videos and Desktop in my home directory, but I guess that's the price we pay for a modrin desktopy operatin' systum.
I too find this irritating.
FWIW my vote is for ~/.python. ~/.local comes in a distant second due to non-obviousness and ~/Python is several light years beyond that.
Evolution: Taking care of those too stupid to take care of themselves.
