To simply check off the "give the program a version" task, /this/ (the version argument) is the way to do it (obvious enough for legions of programmers who are able to use optparse). If you need a more fancy version action, of course, you need to take care of that yourself.

In this case, the ambiguity of the "version=" argument ...

What /is/ this ambiguity of the "version=" argument? There is none!

Do it the way optparse does it, and all is fine!
