Re-reading my post, I realize that my wording was really unclear; sorry.

This breaks quite a few third-party modules, some with segfaults; we (as in Fedora) ran into this building with 2.7 as the standard /usr/bin/python for Fedora 14.

Restating: the deprecation breaks quite a few 3rd-party modules, and I'm in agreement with Jesus' proposal.
