FWIW, I've had a lot of success lately with automating testing of doctest snippets in Sphinx docs via::
$ /path/to/sphinx-build -b doctest
-d docs/_build/doctrees docs docs/_build/doctest
(That was from non-Python-core packages where the convention is that the Sphink docs are managed and built in the 'docs' subdirectory).
