Au contraire! I grant you, it's hard to imagine how using it would be a good idea. But strictly speaking it is usable. (And what is this thread about if not wanton pedantry!) Therefore I'm leaving it in. Feel free to go behind my back and fix it if you feel strongly about this. It is a printable character after all.
Well, if we wanted to get really pedantic--and, who am I kidding, of course we do, this is python-dev--any byte besides 0 would work as a format unit, printable or not. But who among us would dare?
