Raymond suggested that this patch should be discussed here, so here goes: Sounds good on the principle. Of course, the patch needs to be reviewed.
I am very much for this patch. Of course I am biased by my stackless history and would be very happy to get most pickling into Python, where it belongs.
To improve the patch a bit, I propose to put the hidden types into some module. I agree with Kristjan that the types module would be a good place to bootstrap the hidden iterable types.
I even would like to propose a PEP: Whenever stuff is turned into C, which was picklable when implemented in Python, or something new is implemented that makes sense to pickle, a pickle implementation should always be provided.
