I've been thinking that this is a bit of a historical mistake on our part. I'm strongly considering setting os.name properly in Jython3. In fairness to Jython implementers past - it wasn't a mistake but a deliberate design choice at the time since in the old days we where going for the now defunct "100% Java" thing (does anyone remember that?) so this is more of "the design has evolved such that Jython's os.name now feels incorrect".
I'll stop having conversations with myself in public now, sorry :)
