What a strange reasoning. Do they really believe that ABIs don't change when bumping the library version from 0.9.8 to 1.0.0 ?

OpenSSL's history w/r to backwards compatibility up until 0.9.7 wasn't the greatest, but since 0.9.8 it has gotten to a level that's very reliable.
