It'd likely make sense to have either a pure python implementation, or pure python and C-extended, so that Pypy and Jython can share the feature with CPython. Jython can build directly on Java's native SortedMap implementation. The API should not tie it to a tree. Optimizations and refactorings should be allowed. Only O(log N) worst-case behavior should be mandated.
Rare worst cases should be fine for a good reason - see python dict's.
