DESCRIPTION top
The **gcvt**() function converts _number_ to a minimal length null-
terminated ASCII string and stores the result in _buf_. It produces
_ndigit_ significant digits in either [printf(3)](../man3/printf.3.html) F format or E
format.
RETURN VALUE top
The **gcvt**() function returns _buf_.

HISTORY top
Marked as LEGACY in POSIX.1-2001. POSIX.1-2008 removed it,
recommending the use of [sprintf(3)](../man3/sprintf.3.html) instead (though [snprintf(3)](../man3/snprintf.3.html) may
be preferable).
