putwchar(3) Library Functions Manual putwchar(3)

NAME top

putwchar - write a wide character to standard output

LIBRARY top

   Standard C library (_libc_, _-lc_)

SYNOPSIS top

   **#include <wchar.h>**

   **wint_t putwchar(wchar_t** _wc_**);**

DESCRIPTION top

The **putwchar**() function is the wide-character equivalent of the
[putchar(3)](../man3/putchar.3.html) function. It writes the wide character _wc_ to _stdout_.
If _ferror(stdout)_ becomes true, it returns **WEOF**. If a wide
character conversion error occurs, it sets _[errno](../man3/errno.3.html)_ to **EILSEQ** and
returns **WEOF**. Otherwise, it returns _wc_.

For a nonlocking counterpart, see [unlocked_stdio(3)](../man3/unlocked%5Fstdio.3.html).

RETURN VALUE top

The **putwchar**() function returns _wc_ if no error occurred, or **WEOF**
   to indicate an error.

ATTRIBUTES top

For an explanation of the terms used in this section, see
   [attributes(7)](../man7/attributes.7.html).
   ┌──────────────────────────────────────┬───────────────┬─────────┐
   │ **Interface** │ **Attribute** │ **Value** │
   ├──────────────────────────────────────┼───────────────┼─────────┤
   │ **putwchar**() │ Thread safety │ MT-Safe │
   └──────────────────────────────────────┴───────────────┴─────────┘

STANDARDS top

   C11, POSIX.1-2008.

HISTORY top

   POSIX.1-2001, C99.

NOTES top

The behavior of **putwchar**() depends on the **LC_CTYPE** category of the
   current locale.

It is reasonable to expect that **putwchar**() will actually write the
multibyte sequence corresponding to the wide character _wc_.
