APMT 1, 2 [Boeing BSS]

Hughes Space and Communications International, Inc. was contracted to provide a satellite-based mobile phone system to Asia-Pacific Mobile Telecommunications Satellite (APMT) Pte. Ltd. consisting of one APMT satellite and one spare in 1998 for $450 million. Featuring 7 kilowatts of power and a 12.25-meter L-band antenna, the APMT system was to provide the infrastructure to support residents in Asia-Pacific countries reaching north to China, south to Indonesia, east to Japan, and west to Pakistan. Using both L-band user links and Ku-band gateway links, APMT was to be capable of supporting 16,000 voice circuits simultaneously. The first APMT satellite, an HS-GEM (Geomobile) spacecraft model designed specifically for geomobile communications, was to be available for a CZ-3B launch in 2000. APMT was designed to provide a minimum of 12 years of service from its orbital slot between 95 degrees and 125 degrees East longitude.

Asia-Pacific Mobile Telecommunications (APMT) has terminated its contract with Hughes Space and Communications Co. to build the $450 million satellite-based mobile telephone system in April 1999 because Hughes was unable to secure the necessary U.S. export licenses for the program.
