Stratton's Observatory
Alongside the B158 to the east of Hatfield you can find a 4 storey, 100 foot tall, folly tower sat on an octagonal base known as Stratton's Observatory. It was built in 1789 and takes its name from a John Stratton who liked to view the ships on the Thames 15 miles away, from the top of its battlements. It would seem though that this would have been a bit optimistic from this distance, with the telescopes of the time.
It is now used as a private house.Co-Ords: 529495 208105 / TL 294081
