The Pepperbox Folly, follies and folly towers at follytowers.com (original) (raw)
T h e P e p p e r b o x
After viewing the magnificent spire of Salisbury Cathedral, if you leave the city and head SE on the A36 to Southampton, you will after 5 miles come to Pepperbox Hill, a National Trust recreational area.
Here you will find the Pepperbox, a hexagonal 3 stories folly built by Giles Eyre in 1606. It seems that the ground floor originally consisted of open arches, but these have at some time been filled in, as have the majority of the windows.A Lookout
It was built so it is said, to allow Mr Eyre to look down onto his neighbours. There is however no record of Planning Permission being applied for, I wonder why ?I apologize to all purists who may resent me showing my "artists reconstruction" below, but this is possibly how it may have looked, before vandals and time both left their presence.
Visiting:-
Besides the folly picnic and recreation area, has excellent views of Salisbury Cathedral in the distance. The lane leading up to the car park is very rutted and is easy to miss on the brow of a hill, on this fast section of road.Co-Ords: 421280 124860 SU 212248
