Values for their towering stature, strength, and endurance, draft horses played an essential role in the building of Canada. They were the main source of power on early farms, able to do the heavy work that has since fallen to their mechanical replacement, the tractor. Although far less common now, these heavy horses have re-emerged on the world stage thanks to the efforts of devoted breeders.

This section explores Grant MacEwan's contributions to Western Canadian history as one of the foremost experts on the subject. Topics explored include settlement history, agriculture, Aboriginal Peoples, women's history, historical biographies, and general Western Canadian discourse. MacEwan developed a fascination with western Canadian history and through his numerous works he relates the exciting events that transformed a barren and untamed land into the provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
