The Story of John McCrae By John Peddie (original) (raw)

John McCrae's Sketches

John McCrae is well known as an author, but little attention has been given to the fact that he also spent some of his leisure time sketching.

Many of these sketches are observations of places and people he saw while traveling. The sketches included here are a sample of his drawings from the collection of McCrae House. They tended to be small, are often detailed and executed in pencil or ink on paper. As in his poetry, there is a recurring theme of death in many of his sketches. McCrae likely did not make these sketches to be artistic achievements, but they should be regarded as a pastime that was common to this time period. Many others recorded their travels in the same way.
