Dear Mr Malcolm,
This is just an interim reply to your last-but-one letter to Sir Karl Popper, dated 16th April, to which was attached a sample translation by Eva Schiffer.
I have looked at parts of it and found her style very fluent and readable. For closer examination and comparison with the original text, I have so far not had enough time, nor has Sir Karl.
We are expecting a visit from Sir Karl's German publisher in the very near future, and we shall certainly discuss the chances of giving Frau Schiffer some of our translation work. It would be a great relief to know that there is someone who can do the job responsibly and ably. So may I ask you to convey to Frau Schiffer Sir Karl Popper's thanks for preparing the sample translation which we hope will lead to a fruitful collaboration*.
Sir Karl is not very well at the moment, feeling a great need to rest after a recent prolonged attack of tachycardia which unfortunately started at Athens airport just as we were summoned to our plane for take-off. The attack lasted for nearly three hours. I mention this only to explain his lack of response to your latest correspondence.
Yours sincerely, Melitta Mew (Mrs.) Assistant to Sir Karl Popper
* It did so. Eva Schiffer subsequently successfully translated several of Popper's works into German for Georg Siebeck. - A. M.
