New Coll.

Nicola,

Malcolm

I think something v. near the truth is the way. Can you say we've read it, like it as before, but (i) think it's still a good deal too long to risk as a trade book - and n.b. that the idea of a trade philosophy book gives nightmares to salesmen, marketing managers etc, (ii) that there are quite a lot of places where it would need to be made brisker and livelier and this would, sadly, take more editorial time than the Press can afford, (iii) we don't really know what to suggest he should do - he requires a small publisher and a keen editor and we haven't one to hand.

We needn't say that on second reading the yobbish and sexist aspects get on one's nerves a bit.

Will that do?

Ever, Alan
