NYCFC fans will rightfully riot if they miss out on this kid. For me, I hope he goes. If he's in a position to be at a place like BVB like Christian, you have to take it.

A Benfica fan in Keaton's thread actually picked up on this news and wondered whether Benfica was one of the clubs after Gio.
He ended up conceding that he might go to Man City due to the NYCFC ties. Let's hope that is not the case. 3. LandonDonovan2018

I mean, there was never a shot he was going to sign an HG deal with NYCFC. 4. Lookingforleftbacks

"I’m a dad first, and I will support whatever he wants to do," [Claudio] Reyna told Goal. "The thing about a player at 14, 15, 16 is they’re going to make their own decision. They’re going to take everything in and see. It all depends. It’s case by case. It’s certainly, for me, one that’s difficult of course, being sporting director of a club here. But he knows around him all the time I’m his dad first. I’m there to support him, to teach him. Not to tell him he’s great, but that he’s got a long way to go, he’s got to continue to work and develop good habits and to continue to guide him." 7. Gacm32

Has to be an awkward time for Claudio. When Schalke signed Weston McKennie, people were rightly pissed that they would get no compensation. Now, we have pops letting his kid sign for whoever and losing NYCFC's little investment. 9. bigt8917

I don't think Claudio would willingly short circuit his son's career for the sake of NYCFC. If he believes that a great opportunity is coming to his son from Europe, his allegiance to his own son is much greater than to MLS 10. EricSunRa

Of course he does. But he doesn't own his team, and Gio is NYCFC's investment. 11. bigt8917

Who isn't signed to a contract. There may be a soft MLS offer already, but a player like Claudio knows the big picture. If there's an offer he can't refuse, he'll definitely support his son if he chooses it. MLS will always be there later on. 12. Jazzy Altidore

this was definitely dumb. why not speculate he's leaving because hope solo is running for president while you're at it. 13. Brotheryoungbuck

I can't find it anymore but Gio had an a sponsored Adidas ad on the MLS Instagram for whatever reason. It was so bizarre I though it was a dream when I remembered today but I had a conversation about it with a friend and they confirmed I did in fact show them it. If anyone can find it was a pretty standard ad, but I can no longer find Gio tagged in it or it on the MLS Insta, so. 14. dougtee

what im suggesting is heartbreaking disappointment revealing a deeper conversation about systemic shortcomings might make a young player reassess the best place for his continued development, what you are saying is? 15. punintended_13

He's training with NYCFC's first team. Some speculation going around that he is on the verge of signing with NYCFC. I wouldn't be too upset. NYC, and especially Vierra, has been very good to Jack Harrison and Yangel Herrera.. I think it would be good for Reyna to play in that system for a little, as long as he actually got to play. 16. He turned 15 two months ago, you're mad! And don't point to him training with the first team. Emerson Hyndman trained with the FC Dallas first team when he was 12-15 and grandpa Schellas was the coach. Claudio wants his boy training with the first team. OK. 17. Brotheryoungbuck

To be fair I think I read somewhere Emerson wasn’t a top prospect then, right? Gio is supposed to be a top prospect for the U17s if not the top. He’s already signed with an agent so he’s going pro soon. There’s other U17 players who are pro right now too tho. I doubt he would play this year much but next year wouldn’t be crazy. 18. butters59

Emo was about 5'0" at 14 Gio is around 6'0". 19. EricSunRa

Emo was a top prospect, which is why he was playing for the Fulham first team at 17. Yes, he has always been very slight but he was 5'8" at 16 - not so bad. During his time at FC Dallas playing with the first team, there was NO chance that he was going to be signed to play with them. He was always going to Europe with his passport.

My point is simply that Gio has a passport, and has the opportunity to join a better academy abroad - just like Hyndman, Pulisic, and McKennie did. The record at MLS is not good with players of his age, so I wouldn't count on significant playing time/development at NYCFC. 20. ielag

Gio's father is the TD at NYCFC and Vieira has done a good job with youngsters like Harrison and Herrera. And I expect James Sands to see quite a few minutes this season.

And if Gio does sign with NYC, it doesn't mean he can't move to Europe as a teen. It just guarantees NYC would get compensated. 21. largegarlic

Yeah, I wonder if this is why we're seeing a little bit of a trend with MLS signing guys at 15 or 16 (Carleton, Busio, the 2 kids in San Jose). They don't realistically think they can compete for minutes with the first team, but they know that Euro clubs are poaching guys for free at 16 or 17, especially if they have a breakout performance with the U-17 nats.

This case is, of course, a bit unique, since Claudio is part of the club's management. 22. butters59

Emo was a top prospect and still is actually. But he was a super tiny, not just short but very light as well and had no business to be in adult game at the age which Gio is now. And Reyna is big and strong, his dad is TD at the club which is a part of the whole MC structure in his case staying might make sense. 23. ArsenalMetro

Negative on that one. He's 21 years old, almost 22, and has made Bournemouth's matchday squad twice in the league this season. There's a reason he's being linked with a move back to MLS, and it's not because his stock is rising. This is absolutely correct. Gotta get those kids locked down or risk losing them for nothing. 24. butters59

By our standards he is still a top prospect.
