Richard “Richie” Ledezma at PSV Eindhoven (original) (raw)
I find it interesting that PB, after the 49th minute red card for a defender, he kept Richie on the pitch. 2.
Agree - I was listening and when Dams got carded thought Ledezma might give way for a more lock-down defender. Was a strong vote of confidence in his defensive ability he did not. 3.

Can’t remember when Dest is expected back, but would be great if they can start together regularly once he is. 4.

Longer highlights - 11 minutes of them - have gone up on YouTube. Richie was clearly playing RB throughout and looked pretty solid against a tricky 2-footed winger, Shunsunke Mito.
It's notable that Sparta had 5 opportunities after PSV went down a man and 4 of them came after Richie was subbed off. Mito was involved 3 of those.
If Ledezma has become an RB, he looks quite a good one at this level 5.
He's for sure playing better back there than I would have predicted. Sometimes patience/determination in Footie can be a fools errand, but Ledezma has played the long game here and I'm happy it's working out a bit. 6.
Not what I saw. Was partially at fault for the goal, slow game reading a few more times, exactly what should be expected from CM learning how to play FB. Obviously just emergency FB for now. 7.
While the truth will be in the Karsdorp, once Bosz/PSV decided he's game fit, it's interesting that even with Junior seemingly game fit, Bosz chose to start Mauro in the midfield and Ledezma at FB, even with Tillman and Lang (and Land) healthy. Shouten and Veerman being out did limit Bosz' options a bit). Bosz has run out Lang at ALW with Tillman at RCM in the past, but this game decided to keep Lang and Karsdorp on the bench rather than Ledezma, despite both going 45 the game before... Ritchie likely gets another break as Dams' RC will keep him out next week, and Dest is not back yet, so Mauro probably goes back to RB and Ledezma starts unless Bosz decides Karsdorp is finally game fit. 8.
I meant Mauro to LFB in the above, with RL staying at RB. If Karsdorp starts for Ritchie with Junior on the left, we'll know Bosz is ready to give the new vet his shot, and then Ledezma's fortunes depend on Karsdorp's play - at least until Dest is back to it, when everything gets apple-carted again. 9.
On the bench for recent games against Ajax and Girona. Suggests he's not first choice at the moment. 10.

'Fraid so. He was on the bench for those two, plus the games against PEC and AZ before that. Karsdorp started all of them and went 90' in the league games.
Given his wages, Karsdorp was signed as a starter and once he got up to speed after his late arrival, Richie was likely to be benched. Let's just hope that he gets some PT between now and the summer when his contract is up because he's shown he can play at a high level. He just needs to find a club offering a starting place 11.

Hopefully he can go on loan to another Eredivisie side this winter. He's shown he can contribute. 12.

That'd be good for him (depending on the destination OFC).
I doubt it, though. Having come up through the youth system, he's a well-known quantity there and has shown his tactical and positional adaptability at a top level. Good footballing utility knives are not that easy to find, especially for a CL side, and they aren't cheap.
Karsdorp was always going to get his shot once he got game-fit unless he was really off his game. At the same time they lost to Ajax with him starting and he's gotten YC in the late 2nd half of the last 2 matches... Maybe he won't be a 90 every game guy for the whole season. 14.
i dont think PSV even see hims as a left back...i think he will play midfield eventually
hopefully he can still get minutes this season, though.....looking at pepi's situation, simply being good enough doesnt mean richie will actually play for PSV 15.
I think you mean RB, which is where Ledezma has the vast majority of his minutes this season. But yeah, I don't think PSV see him first and foremost as a FB. They had a bit of an injury crisis and he was an admirable fill-in while they bought Karsdorp and brought him up to speed (while Dest, and, intermittently Junior, recovered from injurie(s).) But Ledezma's route to regular midfield minutes is even more difficult, I think, barring a slate of midfield injuries. He's gotten a few run-outs there, in small amounts of sub minutes, and MF - or attacking wing - are his more natural positions, but PSV has a lot of bodies competing for those spots when everyone is healthy. If Ledezma stays at PSV it will be as a swiss-army-knife for now, which is better than the past few seasons. Perhaps more 1st team time this season will tee him up for a more regular MF slot next year or next season. 16.

Plus I think his agent will find 20 minutes off the bench in a CL tie against, well, anyone much more useful than 70' for, say, Heracles against Almere when pitching him to clubs if he's released in the summer.
It could make the difference between a club like Utrecht or even AZ or Braga versus Heralcles, or Vitoria Guimares 17.
Yeah, the guys has like 6 Europa appearances, and 3 CL, a bunch of MLS minutes and scattered Ered. He clearly can play, but at 24 he probably needs to find a league and team that uses his much more, and hopefully further up the field. I'm not sure it will ever be PSV if he wants to be a regular starter. 18.
What would you propose? He feels like a pretty strong return to MLS/make decent money candidate 19.
I think it's really about economics. PSV midfield is one of the most competitive "not big 5" places a guy could be atm. They just have a lot of talent and more in the pipeline. It's a hard place for a player to count on PT, esp if they haven't been brought in, ala Tillman, with real pedigree behind them and hope for a fancy future. But I don't really know what the economics of Ledezma's options are. If he could figure out the money, a move to mid-table Ered would probably make sense. He knows the league, the league knows him, he's shown he can hang. 20.
Yeah for sure. I guess with someone with a history of injuries i think at 24 he has to go to the highest bidder salary wise 21.

Not sure he’s “shown he can hang”. MLS strikes me as more likely. 22.
I think he's shown he can hang in the eredivisie - which is not the same as "excel" but he has 6 league starts this season, good reviews on most. Only one got whoscored less than a 7 (a 6.75 v Sparta) He's made a number of TOWs, even a TOM, iirc... PSV coaching reviews have been good. I think the book on him from most Ered midlevel scouts would be something akin to shown he can hang in the Ered... So then it comes down to options and . If was willing to play for a "shown he can hang" salary, I think he would have eredivisie interest. But I don't think he's going to be someone teams splash cash on either - esp at 24 with his injuries. 23.

He's also out of contract in June, so it's just salary and agent's fees to cover. As for injuries, he'll have been fit for over 2 full seasons by then. Some good teams will be put off but not all.
As for "he can hang", making several TOW/TOM lineups shows that a fit Richie is a bit better than midlevel Eredivisie and he hasn't been too shabby in the CL either. IMO the question is whether he'll be signed for his versatility or because they want a good RB or a good AM.
He'll likely be released, depending on their needs, the likes of Utrecht or even AZ are likely to be watching him at the moment. The likes of Heerenveen or Sparta are sure to be. Then, like you said, it's down to options and money, plus fit. 24.
