Zim Israel Navigation Company: Stewart 1959 no. 425.
Al Fisher, 7 February 1999
Zim (a biblical word meaning "fleets") flag is blue-white-blue (1:4:1) with 7 big gold 6 points stars on the white stripe (4 up 3 down). I see this flag twice a day since Zim headquarters is in the way to my work. The origin of the flag made of two blue stripes and seven gold stars came from the book The Jewish State by B.Z. Herzl, the first leader of the Zionist Organization. You can see a sample of the flag on this 1947 menu at their website.
Dov Gutterman, 15 February 1999
From the Zim website:
Zim was incorporated in 1945 by the Jewish Agency, which held 44% of the shares, the Israel Labour Foundation (Histadrut) and the Israel Maritime League. (...) In 1947 the first Zim ship was purchased (...). The main task of the early years was the carriage of hundreds of thousands of refugees and immigrants to Israel.

The houseflag of Lucy Borchard Shipping Ltd. (website here with animated flag).
Dov Gutterman, 25 August 2001
This is interestingly similar to the houseflags of theBorchard Lines Ltd.(UK) and Fairplay Tugs. Any idea of the reason for such similarity? Were these three once the same company?
