From Gléowine's lament for Théodenfrom The Return of the King VI 6_Many Partings_ The court minstrel of Théoden of Rohan, Gléowine's name comes from the Old English for 'lover of music'. His only known work was the lament that he made for his King, sung at Théoden's graveside as he was buried in the Barrowfield outside Edoras. Telling of Théoden's return from sickness to lead his people to the aid of Gondor in the east, and his death on the battlefield of the Pelennor, it was said to be the last song that Gléowine the minstrel ever created. Notes 1 Though we have no specific dates for Gléowine, the fact that he was Théoden's minstrel means that he must have been a contemporary of that King (Théoden lived between III 2948 and III 3019). Gléowine's funeral song for Théoden was said to be his last work, implying (though by no means proving) that he died shortly after the end of the War of the Ring.
