When the Noldor returned to Middle-earth, this region fell under the control of Fingolfin and Fingon, and they gave it a name in their Quenya tongue: Hísilómë, Land of Mist (or literally 'mist-gloom'). As Quenya gave way to Sindarin, the name came to be replaced by its Sindarin equivalent in common use. So, this land is better known to history in its Sindarin form: Hithlum. Notes 1 Hísilómë was the Quenya name for this region, while Hithlum was the Sindarin equivalent. The latter form is almost universally used in the histories of the land, and the people who dwelt there are therefore always named as '...of Hithlum' rather than '...of Hísilómë'. 2 The geography of this region is generally well established in the canonical works, but the map in the Silmarillion does not include the far northern parts of Hísilómë.
