He was noted for borrowing books, but not for returning them, and Bilbo recognised this in his choice of gift: an empty bookcase. Hugo's father Bruno was the elder brother of Lobelia Sackville-Baggins, making Hugo Lobelia's nephew. Notes 1 We have only a date of birth for Hugo Bracegirdle, but we know that he was present at Bilbo Baggins' Farewell Party - indeed, Bilbo left a gift for him - so he lived at least until the age of fifty-one. Assuming he enjoyed a typical Hobbit lifespan, he would have survived for several decades after this, living on into the early Fourth Age. 2 The modern name Hugo is a latinised version of Germanic Hugh, meaning 'mind', 'heart' or 'spirit'. As used in the Shire, Hugo might represent a translation of a Hobbit-name with a similar meaning, or it might represent an actual name used by the Hobbits, but doubtless one with a quite different meaning, or carrying no meaning at all.
