Indexes: Ainur Alphabetical: L About this entry: Updated 4 July 2023 Updates planned: 1 A name for the Powers of the World A named used for the Valar, at least by the people of Númenor, as a shortened form for the fuller title 'Lords of the West' or 'Lords of Valinor'. Though masculine in form, the title also seems to be intended to include the Queens of the Valar. The term is recorded as being used specifically by Tar-Meneldur, who ruled Númenor during the time when the first stirrings of Sauron were being felt in Middle-earth, and whose aid was requested by Gil-galad. The King debated with himself on the power and responsibility that had been bestowed on him by the Lords, the Powers of Arda who dwelt in the West. He was unsure whether the Lords had granted him the right or authority to intervene in events across the Great Sea, and he ultimately resigned his Sceptre to his son Aldarion. The new King Tar-Aldarion felt none of his father's doubt, and readily allied himself with Gil-galad, sending direct help to the Elves of Lindon. For a detailed list of the Lords, see the entries for Valar and Powers of Arda.
