Indexes: Alphabetical: V Men About this entry: Updated 21 August 2011 This entry is complete The first of the Lords of Andúnië Valandil's father was Elatan of Andúnië, and his mother Silmariën, the eldest daughter of King Tar-Elendil of Númenor. He founded the line of the Lords of Andúnië, whose seat lay on the western shores of the island kingdom of Númenor. Though he did not belong to the direct royal line, he remained close to the royal house, and was important among the Council of the Sceptre (a post he passed on to his descendants). Valandil's mother Silmariën was Tar-Elendil's eldest child, but the Sceptre passed to her younger brother Meneldur because of the laws of succession at that time. Those laws were later changed, and if those later laws had held at the time of Tar-Elendil's death, the Sceptre of Númenor would have passed directly to Silmariën, and from her to Valandil and his descendants. Long after Valandil's time, in fact, his descendants would become Kings in their own right: in direct line through many generations, Valandil was the ancestor of Elendil, the first High King of the Dúnedain in Middle-earth. From Elendil, the line passed on through Isildur, Isildur's son (who was also called Valandil), and on across the generations to Aragorn himself. Notes 1 We don't know how long Valandil lived, but his cousin Aldarion, who was of the same generation of the Númenóreans and shared a common descent, survived for 398 years. Its reasonable to assume, then that Valandil lived until at least II 1000, and perhaps a little longer. 2 The name may also be pronounced (perhaps more naturally) as 'vala'ndil'. The variation depends on whether nd is counted as a single character (as it is in Elvish, hence 'va'landil') or a combination of two characters (as in English, hence 'vala'ndil').
