Map of Scandinavia AD 1721 (original) (raw)
Sweden's entry into the Thirty Years' War in 1630 was pivotal in ensuring the survival of widespread Protestantism in northern Europe. Queen Christina of Sweden also won full control of Estonia and Livonia, as well as Nearer-Pomerania on the German Baltic coast.
However, the Great Northern War of 1700-1721 was Sweden's undoing. It had stretched itself too far, and gained too many circling vultures who wanted a part of it. In 1721, Russia was able to secure Livonia, Estonia, and Ingria, and Prussia gained Nearer-Pomerania the year before. The Swedish empire never recovered.
